Nehru Nagar Housing, Mumbai

Almost 400 Acres of the Juhu Airport land in Mumbai, owned by the Airport Authority of India, has a perennial water pond stretching about 35 acres and has been squatted over 25 acres by the Nehru Nagar Slums. The current Development Plan (DP) for the city, however demarcates this area as a green zone.

The proposed DP 2034, in lieu of the Metro corridor, proposes additional FSI for areas demarcated along the transit corridor. The plan however does not take into account the traffic congestion as well as basic infrastructure for the project affected areas.

The proposal examines a slum housing prototype for Nehru Nagar. Departing from Charles Correa MHADA housing, the proposed housing type responds to an FSI of 3.5 – speculating on possible housing scenarios and urban form that could result in a balanced high density residential development.
